Claire Scott Ceramics and Pottery Workshops
Hello there! My name is Claire and I am a studio potter living in west Sussex with my husband and two children. As a family we have moved fairly frequently, and it was while living in the USA that I was invited by a friend to join a ceramics class and discovered my love of all things clay!
Ten years on we are now settled in West Sussex, living in a small village at the foot of the South Downs where I work from my garden studio, in the beautiful Sussex countryside. I originally trained and worked as a Graphic Designer and Illustrator and these influences often appear in my ceramics, in the surface pattern, texture and hand-drawn details and design of the pieces I make.
Most of my functional ceramics such as bowls, jugs, cups, plates and oven to tableware pieces are made on the potters wheel, but I also like the versatility of hand building techniques for the more sculptural pieces I make. I love to experiment with new ideas and different decorating techniques in the studio and I like to work in all types of clay. Porcelain clay has a beautiful smooth texture and translucency to it, but I really like the diversity and colour of stoneware, and the rich red traditional earthenware terracotta clay, it really depends on the piece that I am making.
I make unique, beautiful and functional pottery, produced by myself in small batches, celebrating the nature and craft of being handmade. I hope my pottery will bring pleasure to the everyday routines of life – somehow drinking from a handmade cup is that little bit more special!
