Carole Barran – owner of Lacuna Child
Lacuna Child is luxury childrens wear brand curating comfortable separates for babies and children. Using organic fabric where possible to create stylish, practical wear, generously cut to last and be passed on to siblings and friends. Fabrics are chosen for their softness and durability from which sweatshirts, joggers, t shirts and jackets are created. Great thought has been given to being as sustainable as is practicably possible and I am very proud that both my factories are also Essex based run by people who put their staffs needs first. The pieces have a timeless quality so that they can be worn by future generations proving that slow fashion is possible when it comes to childrenswear.
As well as childrenswear, I make and sell small and large scrunchies using offcuts where possible. Proceeds from the sale of these go to the CoppaFeel charity as I wanted to support a charity inspired by someone who was Essex based. I was introduced to a 27 year old lady who has a young baby and is living with triple negative breast cancer. I felt like my scrunchies could not only look beautiful but serve a purpose. They are sold online and in beauty and hair salons in Essex to serve as a reminder that this unforgiving condition does not have an age exclusion.
The inspiration for the collection came following the birth of my first grandchild in December 2017. The word ‘lacuna’ means something missing and this felt right as my granddaughter (and now a sister born 2020) live in the States.
After being off with work related stress in 2019 the dream to create a business turned to reality after taking part in Kate Hill’s founder of Make It British mentoring scheme. Her manufacturing expertise led me to the right British factories to bring the collection to life. Creating a business not only gave me a connection to my grandchildren but gave me a purpose that has continued to benefit my mental health enormously.
