Today we meet Ellie of Freyelli Textiles who we look forward to welcoming next Saturday 12th May at Brighton Open Market. Find out a little more about her…
Please introduce yourself and your brand….
Hello I am Ellie Hipkin, I am a Brighton based artist and designer working under the name Freyelli Textiles. Freyelli Textiles is a collection of original textile artwork, prints and homewares. All my textile artwork is inspired by colour from the beautiful scenery along the South coast, and the South Downs.
How would you describe your style and your creations?
My style of textile artwork is bold and colourful, all inspired by colour and the natural world. I feel the free motion embroidery works so well with organic shapes. I start with painting directly onto fabric mainly working with colour, which could be inspired by the changing colours of the seasons, the mist on the sea or the light. I then add detail into the artwork with free motion embroidery.
The original artwork is this then translated into homewares such as mugs, coasters and placements. As well as a range of beautifully printed giclees and greeting cards. I add free motion embroidery to my new range of Giclee prints. Bring back the handmade / textiles element back to the the print, by leaving the threads hanging down from the print adds texture and detail to the artwork, which is very effective once framed. Also making each one a little different.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I love the whole process from mixing colours, which inspires the artwork, and adding detail with the embroidery. But I am a designer at heart so I love translated that original art into other products. There is another part to my business which is personalised embroidered artwork, I love working with customers to create a personal piece of art from a photograph (which is printed onto fabric then embroidery added to the photograph) or embroidering a house / street portrait.
What can we expect to find on your stall at The Fairy Tale Fair Fringe Festival Special on Saturday 12th May at Brighton Open Market? And are you looking forward to taking part?
My stall at the Open Market will show the full range of giclee prints with embroidery, greeting cards and a selection of the homeware range. I can also discuss / explain the personalised artwork.
Do you have a best seller?
My best seller is ‘Sunset Sea View’ Placemats and coaster, I think its the colours, the deep blues and reds together seem to attract customers.
Do you have any plans or ambitions for the future?
The current plan is to grow my homeware range and I am currently designing a range of fabric prints inspired by my own artwork. These fabric prints will be made into lampshades and cushions. I will of course add a little embroidery to the prints to make each piece a little different!
Do you have a motto or inspirational quote?
Having worked as a clothing designer for 12 years before starting Freyelli Textiles, I learnt not to be to be too precious about my work! keep listening to customers, keep learning and keep evolving.
How can we find out more about you?
