Handmade ceramics in stoneware and porcelain; functional and decorative.
Hello, I’m Rachel, a full time potter and pottery tutor.
I was a latecomer to pottery, but after attending evening classes I quickly fell in love with clay! I then completed an apprenticeship at an independent pottery where I have been now working for the past seven years. My love of pottery has extended to teaching, and I now run an after school club at a local primary school and also teach at the community pottery school where I first started my lessons!
I love making pots to be used – mugs, bowls, platters and vases. I often experiment with texture and surface pattern using slips (coloured liquid clay) incorporating techniques such as mono printing, paper stencils and resist. My tableware is either thrown on the potters wheel or hand built, using stoneware clay and glazes. This means everything is fired to a high temperature so the pieces are durable and watertight: they can be used in the microwave, dishwasher and oven.
When I’m not in the studio or teaching I like to make delicate jewellery and porcelain hanging decorations, for celebrations such as Christmas and Easter, at my kitchen table. These are glazed and sometimes finished with gold leaf or even smoke fired in a dustbin in my garden!
