Today we welcome Marie Murphy for the fist time, who we very much look forward to having at Brighton Open Market on November 10th. Find out more about her…
Please introduce yourself and your brand….
I’m an illustrator and a surface pattern designer based in Brighton with over 15 years experience in the creative industry. My first love was surface pattern design and illustration. As a child I would find the craziest patterned item of clothing in the shop and would love it. Much to my grandmother’s disgust! Over the years my family and friends have had a steady supply of my cards and wrapping paper made from everything from old sketches to brown paper. Today my designs usually begin with working in my sketchbook with a line drawing or bold blocks of colour. I then translate those sketches into digital designs. My work is modern, quirky, bold and fun.
How would you describe your style and your creations?
My style is bold and modern. It’s full of colour and pattern. My products are eco-conscious with my card ranges printed in East Sussex on luxurious, thick 300gsm.
Nettuno Bianco card using vegetable inks, notebooks and bookmarks are printed on recycled paper and I use biodegradable cellulose wrappers.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I love researching and being inspired by others. Once I have decided on a product I really enjoy putting together a mood board to develop my designs. Then when the final product comes back from the printer I get very excited. It’s great to see an idea grow from a sketch to final product.
What can we expect to find on your stall at The Fairy Tale Fair Christmas Special at Brighton Open Market this November? And are you looking forward to taking part?
I’m really excited to take part and share a stall with one of my friends, Helen from The Soap People. We are both all about making beautiful products that won’t cost the earth. I will have my Hurst range of greeting cards as well as my Panda and Wreath Christmas cards. Beautiful prints, notebooks, temporary tattoos (Unicorns and Dino of course) and kids bookmarks.
Do you have a best seller?
My Hurst card range sells well in Brighton and London. I have a feeling the Christmas Pandas might be a big one this year!
Do you have any plans or ambitions for the future?
I plan to continue growing my ranges organically. I have a few things in the pipeline for next year that I’m excited about.
Do you have a motto or inspirational quote?
“Maybe your life will work.
Most likely it won’t at first
but that will give you poetry.”
