Today we’re very pleased to welcome back Place Farm House, who are one of our chosen fair sponsors again for Patcham 2018. Find out more about their Patcham based care home…
Tell us a bit about Place Farm House
Place Farm House is a 19 bed residential care home situated on Ladies Mile Road close to Old Patcham Village. We have been a care home for more than 26 years and have built an excellent reputation in the area for quality, homely care. The home is owned by our family and is run day-to-day by myself which I really enjoy.
Care Homes are often getting bad press, what makes Place Farm House different from the rest?
It is frustrating when you hear bad press stories about care homes because these are in the minority and there is a lot of good work the industry is doing to provide quality care to the elderly.
For us as a family, residential care is a personal connection and responsibility which has developed since 1996. We lived in the small flat above Abbey Lodge in the 2000’s (prior to renovation) and we have lived and breathed the caring environment and respect for the elderly. For myself, I have been lucky enough to take on Place Farm House and provide that high level care and respect which I grew up with at Abbey Lodge. I have a responsibility to the residents and their families to provide a home which gives the best care and that drives me when I think about the home on a daily basis. I have built a great team of people which is vital because they deliver the care which I aspire to provide. We also strive to use technology to deliver the best care, which includes electronic system for care notes and medication administration. This is quite novel in the area and I use the technology to improve the quality of care our staff give to our residents.
You sponsored our Christmas fair in 2017, why have you done so again in 2018?
It was a pleasure to sponsor the event in 2017 and we bought some residents down to look around for the morning which they really enjoyed. Place Farm House has been very involved in the Patcham community for more than 26 years and we felt that sponsoring the Fair was an opportunity to continue that involvement and support to the social work which volunteers provide for the benefit of the community. This year we also have a stall so please come and visit us!
Tell us about 2018 for Place Farm House, has it been a successful one for you?
We have had a very good year as we continue our journey and aspiration to be an ‘outstanding’ rated care home. We continue to refine and improve how we provide care to our residents and try to make our approach more bespoke and unique to Place Farm House. Importantly, we do this by listening to our residents and staff because we find they often have the best ideas on how we can improve. We have also put a lot more focus and support into our staff team to recognise the great work they do and make them feel a connection with the Place Farm House family. This has included listening to staff to create our values, more structured induction and supervisions, staff night’s out and awards at our upcoming December staff meeting.
We continue to gain excellent reviews from our families and just as important, positive feedback from the range of professionals whom have a variety of input into the residents care. We have also been out on more minibus trips out to various locations in Sussex for our residents, which they love.
Tell me the funniest thing a resident has said this year..
We had a new female carer start with us this year and a couple of the residents were asked to guess her age. One said 15 (!) another said 20! Our carer is actually in her late 20’s…It was very funny at the time, I hope she took it as a compliment!
