We look forward to welcoming Rebecca Padgham to our Patcham fair on Saturday 10th March for the first time. Find out more about her and her illustrations…
Please introduce yourself and your brand….
My name’s Rebecca Padgham and I am an illustrator and designer based in East Sussex. Since graduating from Southampton Solent University in 2014, I have been producing books and sewn items based on subjects that are personal to me.
How would you describe your style and your creations?
Quirky, witty, whimsical, hand crafted, industrious and subject-focused.
My work always begins in sketchbooks and the subjects are always from personal interests of mine. I work at home and onsite, where many of my characters stem from (e.g. some of my Dogs were drawn on location around Italy, Amsterdam and Paris.)
My sewn items originally existed from imagery created in sketchbooks, which became designs that I took into fabric to make gifts from.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
Working fluidly in a spontaneous manner allows me to create unexpected narratives and happy accidents, which is an exciting advantage. If I knew exactly what my illustrations were going to look like (as if I were to pencil them out first, rub out, pencil over, rub out and then a final pencil rough to work on top of with the material I actually want to use) it would be dull, mundane and I would just dread making work.
What can we expect to find on your stall at The Fairy Tale Fair Easter Special at Patcham Methodist on Saturday March 10th? And are you looking forward to taking part?
I am very much looking forward to be taking part at the Fairytale Fair!
At my stall, you can expect to find handmade books, notebooks, sewn items, badges, prints and screenprinted tea towels.
Do you have a best seller?
My Dogs 4 Pack Badge pack is my best seller.
Do you have any plans or ambitions for the future?
I would like to expand my brand, start selling my sewn items and other gifts for wholesale and grow my Etsy Market.
I would like to compose a narrative incorporating my Bee brand focussing on the subject to influence and promote my creations (e.g. honey soap).
Additionally, I would like to start my own business but there’s a lot to learn yet! I would like to take my narrative work into publications, supporting articles inside. And of course, making personal work along the way.
Do you have a motto or inspirational quote?
“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” – Pablo Picasso
What part of Easter do you enjoy the most?
Easter marks the spring time which brings new life and array of colours in nature, such as lambs, cherry blossom and daffodils.
