Today we welcome back a Fairy Tale Fair favorite! Ali and Jam of Hello DODO have taken part in every Fairy Tale Fair, and we are pleased they will be with us to celebrate our first Birthday! Find out more about their colourful screenprint creations…
“The Fairy Tale Fair is an absolute MUST SEE event! This will be our fourth time selling at the Fairy Tale Fair and it is one of the biggest dates in our diary. It really isn’t like your average craft fair!” – Ali & Jam, Hello DODO
Tell us a bit about you and what you do/ make….
Hello! We are Ali & Jam AKA hello DODO, the playful printmakers. We are a Brighton based couple with a love of fun, bright and clever graphic design full of animals, typography and puns (often all three!) We come up with our ideas and design them together, before eventually handprinting them on to posters, tote bags and now t-shirts too…all from our kitchen worktop :o)
How would you describe your style?
Our style is definitely bright and fun with lots of clever little twists which you have to keep an eye out for! Our designs are perfect for bright homes, children’s bedrooms or nurseries or for anyone with a good sense of humour and a love of bold design. Often people pretend that they’re buying our designs for their kids but we know it’s really for them!
How long have you been making your craft items?
We have been making our designs since October 2011 and have grown considerably since then.
Do you have a best seller? If so what is it?
Our most popular screenprint to date is our ‘I Love A Nice Lion On A Sunday” which we’re just about to launch as a t-shirt for men and ladies too! But we also have a new design ‘Bear With Me…’ which is giving the Lion a good run for his money. People do love a good animal pun :o)
What do you enjoy most about your craft?
I think the biggest enjoyment is sharing our ideas and hard work with other people, it’s so lovely when people really get what we do and appreciate it. We’re also incredibly proud to have taught ourselves to screenprint from scratch…it took a VERY long time to master the craft and we just really love it. Another thing we enjoy is that hello DODO is a complete collaboration between the two of us, so it’s kind of our baby.
Do you take part in other craft events (fairs, open houses, markets etc…)?
Yes lots! In Brighton you can find us at Craftaganza and at the Maker’s Boutique exhibition in the Fishing Quarter Gallery on the seafront. We’re also going to be at Crafty Fox in Brixton in October and Handmade Christmas at the O2 in December! We have also taken part in AT Open House during December and May which is an incredible Artist’s Open House in Brighton.
What are your plans/ ambitions for the future? Or have you already achieved them?
We’re excited to be launching our t-shirts at the moment and have LOTS more planned. We also have a whole list of new designs waiting to be worked on and an exciting collaboration in the pipeline. Our plan is to keep growing hello DODO as big as we can and eventually quit the day job. We also do branding and design work through hello DODO so this is a part of the business we’d like to grow also. WE’RE EXCITED! 😀
You have previously taken part in The Fairy Tale Fair. Did you enjoy the day?
The Fairy Tale Fair is an absolute MUST SEE event! This will be our fourth time selling at the Fairy Tale Fair and it is one of the biggest dates in our diary. It really isn’t like your average craft fair! Most families and visitors come to the fair and end up literally staying for the entire day! There is so much to see and get involved with and the cakes are AMAZING!
