Today we are excited to meet Louise Crookenden-Johnson. We get to know more about her inspirations, style and making process of her ceramics…
Please introduce yourself and your brand….
Hello, I’m Louise I have the joy of being a potter.
How would you describe your style and your products?
I am mainly known for making cute pottery birds and animal ornaments inspired by the garden around my pottery, Robins, Wrens and Flowerpots and a myriad of other creatures from the wild and the sea. Each is hand made and then individually illustrated with with fresh bright designs, observed from nature.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
The chance to be part of the making process from bag of clay to final design; each stage is different, from sticky goo right through to shiny happy glazed piece emerging from the kiln….Usually with me snatching pieces out far too hot because of my excitement an impatience to see them. I am a complete child every time!
Do you have a best seller or favourite to make?
Everything I’m making at the time, I’m kind of in the moment and love that about my days. Today it is pet portraits of cats, dogs and bunnies, which are also some of my best sellers. Great to be trusted to bring to life a likeness of someone’s dearly loved pet.
What are your plans or ambitions for the future?
To get to play every day with my hands in the clay. I work part time currently as a manager in children’s services.
Sum up your brand in 3 words…
Happy, playful, earth conscious.
Do you have a motto or favourite quote for inspiration?
I have adopted a saying that was introduced to me by the wonderful @poppekins on one of her postcards….. “Done is better than perfect” I think originally said by Sheryl Sandberg of Facebook fame.
I am a bit of a perfectionist and so I could go on making changes to work forever, but the wonderful feedback I have from satisfied customers has helped me embrace a more realistic approach, which allows me the permission to get things complete and have headspace and time to innovate and create more which I know is the path to positive wellbeing for me!
