Today we’re excited to catch up with Liza of Woofing Fabulous to find out more about her fun and quirky animal themed pottery creations…
Please introduce yourself and your brand….
Hi Liza from woofing Fabulous Pottery here. I create fun and quirky animals and birds in my garden pottery by the seaside.
Each piece is made by hand from a bag of clay, sculpted and individually made.
Woofing Fabulous is named after my dogs who sit under my work table and critique my work every now and again.
Home of Bertha the kiln where everything is fired on site in my ceramics studio.
How would you describe your style and your products?
When I first started each sculpture that I made seemed to grow their own character as they were made. So I decided that I wanted to make creatures that helped you smile, with their own names and personality.
They are bright and colourful with a sunny character.
There are brooches, hanging Ornaments, miniatures, greeting cards and sculptures.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
Clay is such a therapeutic material to work with. From something that can be recycled from the earth, it can be made into something bright and shiney.
You can either make something flat and easier to make to creating huge dog sculptures that really stretch my skills.
It is such a calming process that has a life of its own, not to be hurried and taken for granted.
I feel lucky to be able to work from home in my happy place with my animals around me.
Do you have a best seller or favourite to make?
Thats really hard to answer. I guess I love seeing peoples faces when they see my seagulls on deckchairs and then if they buy one they tend to walk off saying “what shall we name him”. Or when someone sees my large dog sculptures and go to stroke them and smile.
It’s the feeling that they give to people and seeing that.
The other thing I love is when I open the kiln after a firing. On the first firing its a fingers crossed moment that they have all made it through ok. Then once the glazes have been put on and I open the kiln its like opening a present and seeing all of the colourful glazes tinking as they cool down in the kiln. They make a little noise as they cool.
What are your plans or ambitions for the future?
There are some pieces of pottery equipment that I would like to invest in like a large clay extruder for the wall and a small kiln. As Bertha is quite a large kiln and takes awhile to fire and cool down etc. I would be happy to get secondhand ones as a lot of my equipment has been salvaged. Including Bertha as she came from my old school where I was a Head of Art.
Sum up your brand in 3 words…
Fun, Quirky, Whimsical
Do you have a motto or favourite quote for inspiration?
I have a poster in my studio made by Just Daydreaming that says “Swing It, Shake It, Move It, Make It” by The Spice Girls. Which seemed to sum up throwing around the clay in the studio for me. Plus over the last year I have kept saying to myself “Just keep going”
