Please introduce yourself and your brand….
Hello, I’m Kirsteen and I’m the one person show at Stitch Studio where I make super cute animal decor, brooches and pictures, using 100% wool felt in all my pieces.
How would you describe your style and your products?
My style is inspired by my childhood memories, from how I remember my toys, TV programs and cartoon animals, and the colours and prints of my home made clothes, so it’s a bit retro and nostalgic.
I’ve always loved animals, I have to admit it’s mainly the soft cuddly ones and I love to make my felt animals as kawaii-cute as possible. I create animals in a distinct style, they are soft sculptures but they don’t have the uber realism of needlefelting. Instead they have a retro style, a wink to my childhood, and a baby animal cuteness – big heads and eyes. They have the distinct characteristics of the animal, a likeness but they are not literal.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I love that I get to create a new little personality out of felt and it’s such a thrill when it turns out lovely and the customer is really pleased. That makes me very happy. It’s also pleasantly self indulgent when I get to spend time absorbed in things that evoke childhood memories, and that are frankly so damn cute!
Do you have a best seller or favourite to make?
I’d have to say, my large Dachshund. I love making it because every single one turns out a little different. I usually (when time permits) leave attaching it’s ears until the very end and just pin them in place. I might leave it like that for a couple of days, mulling over his ear position, moving and changing them, until I’m sure they’re right. It makes such a difference to how it looks, it’s difficult to commit!
What are your plans or ambitions for the future?
My plans are fairly loose, to keep going and to find and take opportunities.
