Today we welcome back one of our Fairy Tale Fair regulars Karen Rao felt artist, who’ll be joining us on 10th & 11th November at Brighton Open Market.
Please introduce yourself and your brand….
My name is Karen Rao and I am a felt artist.
How would you describe your style and your creations?
I create animal inspired costume wear in the stunningly tactile medium of wool which is rich in colour and dramatic in texture. I follow the ancient art of wet felting, using just wool soap and water to hand felt eared and horned headdresses for theatre, festival wear and just for fun!
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I welcome custom orders whether it is a subtle pair of hair clip ears, an outrageously outlandish headpiece or a portrait hat of your beloved pet. My work is varied and forever evolving with countless felt making techniques I have yet to try. I never really know what’s around the corner which keeps my work refreshing and exciting.
What can we expect to find on your stall at The Fairy Tale Fair Christmas Special at Brighton Open Market this November? And are you looking forward to taking part?
I always love exhibiting at The Fairy Tale Fair and meeting all the talented artists and makers, some of who I’ve been selling with for years! I’m excited to be bringing along some new work this November in the form of winged collars. I’ve felted feather designs for owls, eagles and the blue black raven adorned with real feather details. My woodland animal hats will be returning of course with matching fingerless gloves, hair clip ears and feather corsages!
Do you have a best seller?
The fox is always popular with its beautiful auburn colouring and also the hat that I’m often seen modelling – the Ram.
Do you have any plans or ambitions for the future?
I’m always looking for new and exciting fairs to exhibit at which enable me to reach new customers with new possibilities. I’ve had wonderful commissions for theatre this year and I hope that this area continues to grow
How can we find out more about you?
