Today we chat with Sally of Pigment Artwork ahead of welcoming her back to our So This is Christmas fair on Sunday 5th December at Worthing Charmandean. Find out more about her and her illustrations…
I’m Sally, a children’s writer and illustrator based in Sussex. I spent the first ten years of my career performing in musicals all over the UK and Europe, but usually with some watercolours and pencils in my suitcase! When the time came to stop performing, I set up Pigment Artwork and began to create bespoke Toy Portraits, Baby Names and Family Portraits for children (and the young at heart). This year, I fulfilled a lifelong ambition and wrote and illustrated my first children’s picture book, which I am so excited to be launching this Christmas.
How would you describe your style and your creations?
The Very Wolfy Book combines humour, beautiful hand-drawn illustrations and a heartfelt story about making new friends and looking beyond what you know. It’s suitable for children (and small wolves) aged between about 2-6, either as a bedtime story or a book that they can discover and read for themselves! The Wolfy Wolves have been characters in our family for a long time, and I can’t wait for others to get to know them and find out about their Wolfy Ways…
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I’ve loved books for as long as I can remember – and I’m very lucky that my working day can include drinking lots of tea while work out the best way to illustrate a wolf being hit in the face by a flying baked bean!
What can we expect to find on your stall at So This is Christmas on Sunday 5th December at Worthing Charmandean? And are you looking forward to taking part?
This year I am filling my stall with Very Wolfy goodies – I will have copies of The Very Wolfy Book, plus an accompanying Very Wolfy Activity Book and some Very Wolfy Christmas Cards! Both I and the wolves (who will, of course, be coming along) can’t wait – we are also looking forward to eating mince pies and howling along with the Christmas carols.
Do you have any plans or ambitions for the future?
I have already started work on the next Very Wolfy Book, which should be ready to launch in time for Christmas 2022 – so, if you buy a copy of the first book year, make sure you stay in touch and can find out what the wolves get up to next.
Describe your Christmas in 3 words…
This year, I think it will have to be a Very Wolfy Christmas!
